How do forensic investigators unlock the secrets of the dead when they cannot speak for themselves? In this 1.5 hour workshop, students will be introduced to gross anatomy; what pathologists seek when determining cause of death; and will learn how to perform their own postmortem examinations. Then, we move deeper – into the blood stream and beyond – as students discover the science of poisons and potions: from ancient concoctions of arsenic to more modern homicidal brews.
This workshop covers topics in: biology and chemistry
Designed for ages 13+
This bundle will be available on March 9, 2018
Resources for 4 x 15-minute practical sessions
Each of our bundles comes with all the resources required (i.e. handouts, answers) to deliver 4 hands-on practical sessions on the following topics: assessing decomposition; interpreting autopsy files; autopsy case studies; and drug testing and analysis.
Our bundles contain all the teaching resources you need to deliver a 1.5 hour workshop to your students. In addition to materials related to the workshop’s taught component (i.e. the lesson plan, presentation and presentation transcript), you will receive handouts and worksheets for four separate 15 minute practical activities.
All of our workshops are designed for ages 13+. Please note that this bundle contains sensitive and graphic content. We recommend that teachers check our content to ensure that the material enclosed is appropriate for your students.
There are 4 practicals in this workshop. The broad themes are:
- Assessing decomposition
- Interpreting autopsy files
- Autopsy case studies
- Drug testing and analysis
No. This bundle doesn’t contain the equipment you’ll need.
An equipment list is enclosed in our bundle – and you can find links to all of these items in our online shop. You’re free to purchase these materials wherever you like, but when you purchase through the website, it helps us out a little more 🙂
Each workshop is designed to be delivered in 1.5 hours (but we’ve often found that teachers utilise the bundles over several different lessons). Generally speaking, there is a 20 minute taught component, 60 minutes for practical work, and 10 minutes for a conclusion.
Notes on Practical Work
Each student will complete all practical activities over the course of the workshop. Our bundle includes a full equipment list. Equipment for the workshops must be purchased separately.
